International Air Age Education Packet
Instructor Guide
Students in every part of the world should know that they live in the Air Age. They need to know about aviation, and to understand how it improves their lives economically, technologically and socially. This Air Age Education packet was prepared to help your students learn more about airplanes and what they do.
Here are some suggestions to help you to obtain the maximum value from this packet:
A. This packet contains six posters
- How Birds and Aircraft Fly -- All children have watched and wished to imitate the flight of birds. This shows the similarity between a bird and an aircraft, and names the physical forces acting on an aircraft in flight.
- Parts of the Aircraft -- Provides the names of parts on the outside of an aircraft and on the instrument panel.
- How an Aircraft is Controlled -- Displays with arrows the motions made by a pilot to maneuver an aircraft, and the resulting effects upon the control surfaces of the aircraft.
- General Aviation at a Major City Airport -- Shows airline aircraft and a variety of general aviation aircraft at a major city airport.
- General Aviation at a Small Community Airport -- Shows how general aviation aircraft serve a small com-munity airport.
- The Total Air Transportation System -- Presents the total system, with airline aircraft and general aviation aircraft forming a network to serve the entire population.
Click on each section to find more information on teaching aviation and also to view posters in a larger format, or download a PDF files of all six posters (PDF file format, 460K)

To view and print PDF files you must have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. Download a free copy of the Adobe Acrobat Reader from Adobe's Web Site. |
B. The posters can be used for the study of aviation as a separate subject, or to add value to the study of other subjects. Examples are
- Science -- Discuss the forces acting upon an aircraft in flight. Discuss the principles of physics that are used in aircraft instruments and control systems.
- Mathmatics -- Plan imaginary trips of interest to your students. Obtain aviation charts from local aviation organizations. Compute distances and determine fly-ing time for various trips, compute travel costs, or other mathematical projects.
- Social Studies -- Discuss the importance of trade between regions. Discuss how a transportation system aids progress in manufacturing, marketing, culture, the arts and other activities.
- Language Arts -- Learn the terms used in the posters, their definitions and their spelling. Prepare a story of an air trip that the students will practice reading and writing.
- Career Study -- Identify the careers illustrated in the posters. List the skills needed in each one.
C. You do not need a large amount of aviation knowledge to teach with this kit. Your students will enjoy contributing their own knowledge, and of conducting research by using other materials. A guest who is active in aviation may be invited to speak to your class. Persons from a Cessna Dealership, a Cessna Pilot Center, an aviation official from the government, or any pilot may be happy to visit your class. Explain that they can use these posters when they speak.
